My advice on going to day one outside of San Francisco: Go

LAST August 6, 11:30 am. Day tickets for Saturday have Sold Out but day passes are still available for Sunday.

August 6, 9:30 am Outside Lands in San Francisco tends to sell out. Not in this year. Day tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re wondering whether to buy a last minute ticket, my advice after spending Friday day there is this, even if you are disappointed with the line-up and only know a few bands playing (see our recommendations here). The best part of my day was discovering nudes I didn’t know, such as the Zambian artist Sampa the Great who created a sticky whirlwind of hip-hop, rap and jazz-drenched afrobeats; and Fay Webster, who soothed the audience with whispered, loving indie country ballads while playing her guitar.

Convinced? Now you have to figure out how to get there.

Lyft and Uber are expensive this weekend as demand picks up prices (SFGATE wrote about crazy prices coming home Friday night). My advice is to hop on a MUNI, ride a bike or do what I did and use the $ 24 prepaid shuttle service (buy online ticket) that runs between the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and the Golden Gate Park festival site. The buses start at 11am and when I arrived on Friday at 10:45 am the line was already formed.

The 15-minute wait was an opportunity to see the costumes prepared for the festival. Outside Lands is about as much fashion as music. People wore tank tops with bead strings down over exposed bellies, Doc Marten cargo pants with mini skirts, knitted pants that resembled the blankets my grandmother wore on the bed, and scout uniforms with marijuana patches on them.

On the bus, two girls were wondering whether to spend the whole day at Sutro Stage or to jump from stage to stage – an important decision for anyone going to the festival. I ran the Outside Lands app on my phone and started setting up my schedule, which took a lot of stage jumping as I enjoy watching as much music as possible. (If you haven’t already, download the app and create your schedule. You can ask the app to notify you in front of the band you want to catch – a feature that comes in handy when you’re dancing in a DJ tent and losing track of time.)

At 11:30 am I walked through security (very easy, just be sure to follow the strict bag requirements – find them in the SFGATE Outdoor Grounds Guide) and entered the festival grounds. The windmill in the center of the Polo Field whirled in the sea breeze, and the sun’s rays shone through the pink-colored cotton candy clouds flying overhead. Live music didn’t start until noon (that’s what happens every day) and Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hillbury Hill” was played over the PA system. The lyrics match how I felt: “My heart is beating boom boom boom boom.”

The festival grounds were quiet and had more open space than people. I went to the booth where they check your ID and give you a special wristband so you can buy alcohol. No lines. Later that day, a friend waited 15 minutes to pick up her band. All of this brings another clue, my best advice – go early when there is no line and you can move closer to the front of the stage.

By noon I was in the front row of the Sutro Stage and caught Spelling, a Bay Area artist who has a great voice and experimental electronic pop sound.

“What’s up?” she shouted to the crowd. “It’s a beautiful day. I’m glad to get some sun. Good to see you all.”

Dressed in a full skirt and long hair falling down her back, she moved around the stage like a spooky ballerina, taking the crowd into dark, haunted alleys with her captivating, synthesized music.

“Her music pushes the boundaries of pop … It’s completely different,” said Modesto’s Logan Albiani. “I don’t even know what genre it is, but I love it.”

As she sang her popular anthem “Awaken”, the audience was excited: “Everything we want is right here. Everything we need and more. Let your heart surrender. Let your heart change, ”she sang.

The music sped up and two punk rock women in black high boots and doll dresses danced wildly, waving their arms in all directions. It was 12:30 and the party had already started.

On the Lands End stage, Cory Henry made the crowd go wild with his retro-funky groves.

“One more song!” Henry called. “Is it alright?” The roar of the crowd spread across the Polo pitch.

The festival feel ready for the event was strong and I had a full day of music ahead of me. I did not regret it.

Three more tips from my day:

  • You cannot bring your own drinks to the festival, but you can take an empty water bottle with you and there are special stations where you can refill them.
  • The lines in the bathrooms are longer, but the nearby Helman Hollow and Panhandle Stage were shorter.
  • I’m glad that I took a light down jacket with me, which I could easily tie around the waist and put on in the evening when the fog came and it got chilly. I’d be cold in just a sweatshirt or sweater.
